The Northwood Primary Suite project is complete! Built MN was the contractor on this project and nailed it. It is always so fun to see the design vision come to life. Chelsie Lopez captured the transformation beautifully!
Primary Suite Design
Let’s start with the design of this space before moving into the reveal. In the mood board below, you’ll find that our inspiration included both gray cabinetry and wood. We initially worked through two design options including one that kept the clients existing vanity painted gray and one with a new custom vanity.
In the end, the clients loved the warmth and natural feel of the wood tones and wanted a taller vanity, so they went with the new custom option. Another element that you’ll see in the mood board is a large open feeling shower with light tile.
Once we had the plan in place for a new vanity, it was time to select the other materials. The goal was to bring in a combination of gold and black finishes. For the plumbing, we chose the Delta Trinsic line in matte black. This is a great collection if you’re looking for clean and modern lines that don’t feel too contemporary.
Other design elements included adding a freestanding tub, herringbone shower floor + niche tile, and large format porcelain tile for the main floor and shower walls.
Renderings
In these renderings, you’ll see a large open shower with a glass door to achieve a brighter and bigger feel. To ensure privacy and create a better flow, we also closed off the toilet room. By adding a freestanding tub, the clients got all of the elements they were hoping for in their primary suite.
These renderings helped us finalize the design decisions and confirm the new wood vanity as well.
Before + Afters
Ok, now time for the before + afters! You can see the linen closet off to the right was in an awkward spot and blocked light coming in from the window. We removed it and added a a freestanding tub in it’s place.
Gaining a freestanding tub without having to increase the square footage of a bathroom is a major plus! This one is a great size at 60 x 30 inches and looks like the perfect spot to relax.
This area of the bathroom got a major upgrade. Previously, the shower felt tight and dark as you had to walk around the corner to enter it. Also, the toilet was tucked away, but it was still out in the open.
By opening up the shower, we were also able to create a private toilet room. The shower is much easier to access and feels so much brighter.
Although the vanity had good storage and the layout worked well, the clients were looking for a taller cabinet and more organic and lighter feel in the finishes.
The new vanity brings in warmth, while the black accents add contrast to the otherwise light and neutral bathroom. By painting the walls Drift of Mist, they provide a beautiful neutral undertone.
The Reveal
A freestanding tub is a design element that most homeowners are wanting in their primary suite, but it’s also something that takes up a decent amount of space and can quickly add to the budget. In this case, we already had room where there was previously a linen closet and were able to bring plumbing over to this area. The tub next to the window takes advantage of all the natural light and creates a beautiful moment in this corner of the bathroom.
Since the previous shower was more enclosed, this bright and open shower makes such a difference. You’ll see two shower heads on opposite walls, creating a beautiful and functional oasis in this bathroom. We kept the wall tile simple with 24 x 24 white porcelain tile, paired with a pretty herringbone marble on the floor and niche areas.
Due to the new shower layout and size, we were also able to incorporate an area for additional storage. The lower cabinets provide a space to store linens and towels, while the upper shelves are perfect for jewelry and decor pieces.
A custom white oak vanity brings a natural and organic feel to the space. Black hardware offsets the wood tone. We kept the look clean and simple by doing the same pull on the drawers and doors. The combination of the gold and black light fixture is the perfect way to mix finishes. With open glass cone shades, it also provides lots of light to the space.
Little touches of greenery in the space give a nod to the organic and natural feel. If you’re looking to create a more relaxing and spa-like look in your bathroom, consider some faux plants in pretty vases for a simple, yet curated look.
And that’s a wrap for the Northwood Primary Suite bathroom. This was such a wonderful project, and soon we’ll be moving onto the client’s mudroom and laundry space. Stay tuned for that!
