Mid Century Modern Bathroom Transformation

This mid century modern bathroom was quite the transformation! Built MN did an amazing job on this remodel and it was great to work together on creating a space that works so well for the clients and that they love. Let’s check out the befores and design and then get into the reveal!

Before

The clients liked the overall layout of their bathroom, but were looking to bring in more of that mid century modern style and make it feel less dated. The top goals were to add a freestanding tub, incorporate a makeup vanity, and make the shower more bright and open.

On this wall, the plan was to remove the vanity and tub to make room for a makeup vanity between two sinks. The function of a double vanity worked well, we just needed to reconfigure cabinets and update the look. The clients also wanted these vessel sinks to go!

The shower felt closed off with the frosted glass and drop in tub to the right. Our plan was to take the tile all the way to the ceiling to highlight the vault and height and install a freestanding tub in place of the drop in.

If you have a drop in tub that you aren’t able to remove, consider updating it with an accent wall and new doors like what we did in the Rustic Elegance Bathroom.

The plan for this side of the bathroom was for it to remain generally the same, but with a new shower and toilet.

Mid Century Modern Design

The inspiration for this space included black hexagon tile, a freestanding tub, wood slab front cabinets, and gold fixtures.

Once we honed in on the style, it was time to move into material selections. During this process, the clients are presented with two options and we narrow it down to their favorite. As you can see in the concept board below, the gold was brought in through plumbing fixtures and black accents in the mirror and hardware.

Even though the layout stayed similar to the original, there were some impactful changes made. We took out the drop in tub to make room for a more modern and sleek freestanding with a deck mounted tub filler.

The vanity now has room for a makeup counter, along with two sinks and a storage base. The shower gained a few inches toward the toilet to make it feel larger.

Renderings

In the renderings, you’ll see how the materials and layout come to life. These help the clients make design decisions before construction begins and feel confident in their choices.

After

And now time for the reveal! Although we didn’t majorly change the layout of this bathroom, it feels like such a different space. Chelsie Lopez captured the space beautifully with the reveal photos!

The vanity now features slab front doors with a makeup vanity in between two sinks. This allows space for both of the clients to store their bathroom supplies, while having a spot dedicated to hair and makeup. Black hexagon tiles contrast with white walls and complement the darker wood tone.

With the drop in tub gone, this back wall feels so much bigger and more open. A two sided glass shower lets the light in and creates more visual space around the tub. By taking the tile all the way up, the vaulted ceilings feel more grand too.

Gold sconces in a mid century modern style provide light over the fun shaped black mirrors. Mixing metals is always fun in a bathroom and the black and gold work together beautifully.

The walls were painted Snowbound by Sherwin Williams, which created a neutral base for the rest of the design elements to shine.

Although the layout of this view didn’t change, a new toilet, fresh coat of paint on the walls, and gold towel bars help update the entire room.

The Shower

The shower features large format porcelain tiles that look like marble, but are easier to clean and maintain. Larger format tiles decrease the amount of grout and create a seamless look in the shower.

To tie in the black floor tiles, we went with smaller penny tile for the shower floor.

A tiled niched provides a spot for shampoo, conditioner, and soap.

The Vanity

One of my favorite parts of this mid century modern bathroom is the little makeup counter. Now the client has a spot to do her makeup and hair in the mornings in her new bathroom. She found this leather chair that can be adjusted to the right height and even has storage!

Since the clients were keeping their existing trim, casing, and door, we wanted the wood from the vanity to work with it, instead of compete. This warmer tone adds warmth to the space and works well with the other wood elements in the room.

The Brizo sink faucets have a sleek and modern look to them, which creates a clean look on the vanity wall.

Rectangular sinks with rounded edges provide plenty of sink space, while still being easy to clean.

Details

The smallest of details can make the biggest impact in a space. Choosing a hardware that felt modern and played off the other design elements brought a nice detail to the vanity. The Cambria quartz countertop has hints of black and gold to bring in those finishes as well.
