Our DIY bathroom refresh is complete! We transformed this space in one weekend for under $350. It was such a good reminder that turning your house into a home you love doesn’t need to take a ton of money or time.
Now, let’s get into the details of this space!
Before
This bathroom is in our basement and will be part of our new guest suite once the bedroom project is complete. We didn’t update it when we did all of the projects to the main level when we moved in, so it was time.
Here is what the space looked like before:
While it was a functioning bathroom, it definitely didn’t reflect our style and was lacking personality. Since it is in the basement, I knew we could go a little bolder with the design than what we did to our other bathrooms. It also will be getting a lot more use once we have a finished bedroom in the basement, so we wanted it to be a space that felt welcoming and fun for guests to use.
Inspiration
Our goal for this space was to give the space a fun and unique look without going crazy on cost. The inspiration included a black ceiling, leftover peel & stick tile from our kitchen, and black fixtures. We planned to keep the vanity, but upgrade it with new hardware and a new faucet.
In Progress
Since this is a smaller space, painting the ceiling black actually made the room feel taller and added a statement to the room. We kept the light fixture since it also included the vent for the bathroom, but painted it black to match the ceiling.
Another simple way we updated this space was spray painting the shower door. To do this, I used tape and plastic sheets to cover up the glass area, floor, and walls. Cardboard was used to keep the paint from getting into the shower. This upgrade was very low cost since it took less than one can of spray paint. It was surprising how awesome the finish turned out too!
My tip would be to spray a couple of very light coats so you don’t get streaks or paint pileups. The inside of the shower was left as is, so that we don’t need to worry about paint wearing off from shower use.
After
And here is what this DIY bathroom looks like now! Although there were some doubters with the black ceiling, everyone loves it once they see it. It ties into the black shower door, faucet, and hardware, pulling together the whole look.
And I cannot get over this black shower door! If we would have replaced the door, it would have cost us hundreds of dollars, but this spray paint makes it look so much better for a fraction of the cost.
The vanity got a new look with an updated faucet and hardware, while still having a warm feel since we kept the wood cabinets as-is.
A new toilet was installed, along with the peel & stick tile that we used in our kitchen. I love how the tile really upgraded this bathroom and ties into our upstairs as well.
This DIY bathroom was a fun and quick refresh and we cannot wait to host guests in our basement “suite” once the bedroom is complete! The finish line is in sight and we’ll be sharing all the details and behind-the-scenes over on Instagram before the final reveal.
