The Scandinavian Industrial basement finish is a wrap! Unfinished basements are always a good design challenge because they start as a blank slate and then become usable square footage in your home. It’s also a fun area to add some new design elements as well. After moving into this new build home, the clients were excited to add their own personality and style to the lower level!
Living Room
Before
The floor plan of this space was pretty well set with a living area, additional bedroom, and rough-ins for a bathroom. Our plan was to create a media wall with cabinets in the living room to add storage and a focal point.
After
We needed to add a soffit on the right side of the living room to contain duct work, so created an intentional offset look with an arched nook on the left side of the space. The clients loved how this turned out and so do I. By painting the arched nook black, it added contrast and visual interest to the room. It also leans into the Scandinavian Industrial style too.
On the other side of the arch, we incorporated wood cabinets with drawers for hiding toys, games, and more. The wood cabinets match the shelves in the nook, creating a cohesive feel.
Floating shelves are such a fun way to add personality to the space. On these shelves, you’ll see the client’s record player, plants, books, and decorative pieces varying in height and texture. If you’re needing help with how to style them in your own space, check out this blog post.
Office
Before
By finishing the basement, the homeowners were able to add another bedroom to their home. This space acts as an office currently, but can be used as a bedroom down the road if needed as well. Here is what the space looked like before…

…and what it looks like now! We added black French doors so the room can be closed off, while still allowing light to flow through the basement.
Filing cabinets act as drawers and “legs” for the butcher block desk top. Thin vertical shiplap goes up the back wall with a shelf above. A custom cabinet on the right adds storage and more shelf space. The offset look plays into the arch detail in the living room as well, bringing the whole Scandinavian Industrial design together.
The Dry Bar
Before
The final space in this basement finish was the dry bar. Here’s what it looked like before…

…and now! We wanted to create a “moment” on this wall and a moody dry bar was the perfect addition. Dark cabinets are paired with wood shelves and gold hardware for a beautiful contrast.
To the right of this wall is the entrance to the bathroom and I love the contrast of the moody bar with the light and bright feel of the bathroom.
In the bar section of the living room, we were also able to incorporate a table and chairs, which serves as the perfect spot for playing games and entertaining.
A black chandelier nods to the Scandinavian Industrial style the clients love so well and plays off the metal legs of the boucle chairs as well.
It was such a joy to work with amazing clients on this Scandinavian Industrial basement and help bring their vision to life through the design! I love how the mix of moody and bright played out in the space. It added personality and life to this home and can be enjoyed for years to come.
