The Scandinavian Coastal lower level went through quite the transformation! The contractor on the project, Koncan Construction, did an awesome job. Chelsie of White Label Visuals captured the space so well in photos as well.
Although the lower level was technically finished, it lacked character, and my clients wanted a more intentional design to make it feel like home. There was also under utilized square footage in the space that my clients wanted to make the most of.
The Design
For the designs of this lower level, we leaned into a Scandinavian Coastal feel, with fun blue and green paint colors and gold fixtures. We also kept the tile and countertops light to make the space feel a bit brighter.

Bathroom
Before
Prior to the renovation, my clients described their lower level as a “beige box” with a very neutral color palette. The home was built in 2010 and had all builder-grade materials, which lacked personality.

After
Without changing the floor plan, we completely transformed the bathroom with new shower tile, a gorgeous navy vanity, and all updated fixtures. Even though the layout is the same, this space feels totally new.

One of my favorite features in the bathroom is the added sauna opposite the vanity. The space was previously part of a large closed off the extra bedroom/workout room. We were able to maintain a small closet space, while making room for the sauna entrance through the bathroom. This bathroom is right off the workout room, so it’s the perfect place to start or end each day.

We added a vertical shiplap wall to give a nod to the coastal design style and add more character. For the flooring, we selected patterned tile from The Tile Shop that adds in subtle movement. It pairs well with the shower subway tile from Bedrosians.
All the gold fixtures from Delta work really well with the sconces from Visual Comfort and pulls from Top Knobs. I also love the quartz countertops on the vanity that bring an earthy feel to the space.

Living Room + Bar
Before
Previously, the living area was a large open space that lacked intentionality. My clients love to host and spend time as a family, but the previous living room didn’t support their lifestyle well.

After
We took advantage of the square footage to create a more purposeful living area with a new gas fireplace, a bar for additional seating behind the couch, and a separate game area.

On the main wall of the living room, we added a gas fireplace with tile that feels very coastal, surrounded by built-ins for additional storage and shelving. To carry the cohesive design through the lower level, we also added shiplap walls behind the wood shelving. I also love the gold accent lighting from Crate + Barrel.
Separating the game area from the living area created multiple gathering spaces within the larger room. We also added storage to the game area to keep the main living area tidy.
Opposite the fireplace wall, we added a large wet bar, which is perfect for entertaining. Once again, my clients now can enjoy additional storage in a way that feels a bit unexpected.
Behind the bar, we chose a white porcelain tile in a herringbone layout to add personality, which is accented by the beautiful gold sconces from Rejuvenation.

This space is now perfect for entertaining guests for any type of event!
Nook and Sitting Area
Before
This corner was underutilized before the remodel, so we wanted to create an intentional corner that my clients could enjoy.

After
We created a cozy corner with builtin benches that can open up to store items not needed as often. This space is also perfect for hosting to have additional seating and a table to eat at. The round table and banquette chairs fit perfectly with the coastal design style, especially when paired with the large pendant light.

Before
Between the bedroom and bathroom, there was previously an open space that we wanted to take advantage of.

After
In this storage area, we added accent wallpaper and built-in cabinets to add more personality to the space, while also adding a lot more function. We also rounded out the arch separating this area from the main living space.

Throughout the entire lower level, we selected beautiful light fixtures, including the flush mount fixture in this space.
Workout Room
Although this room is technically a bedroom, my clients opted to use it as a workout room, which is perfect for a lower level.

Details
I loved tying in the gold hardware and light fixtures together to create a really cohesive design feel throughout the lower level.
