This main level remodel with Holly Home Renovations was such an amazing transformation! After moving into their home, the clients knew they wanted to update the main level to be more functional for their family, while also reflecting a modern traditional style they love.
Before
Previously, the kitchen felt dark and dated with cabinets the same color as the flooring and millwork. The overall layout worked well, but the clients wanted to gain space in the kitchen to create a larger island by pushing the wall with the range back a few feet.

Behind the kitchen was a formal dining room that was not used and the plan was to use it for more kitchen space and then divide it into two areas – a walk-in pantry and a dry bar.

In the living room, our goal was to work with the existing bookshelves, but update the fireplace and railing to match the rest of the main level remodel design style.

In the entry, the plan was to take out the old railing and replace it with an updated design, add vertical shiplap to the wall, and create more of a focal point when entering the home.

Main Level Remodel Design
For the design of this home, we wanted to incorporate classic finishes, warm wood tones, and elements that would age with the home for years to come.

In the rendering of the kitchen, you’ll see a darker island, wood glass cabinets for displaying glassware, and creamy cabinets on the perimeter. By continuing the darker color into the dry bar, our plan was to bring a cohesive feel throughout the spaces.

From this angle, you’ll see the larger island and updated living room design.

After
Entry
The entry sets the tone for this whole main level remodel! A new railing with white balusters brings in a timeless look, while the vertical shiplap wall adds interest. To the left of the stairs, we added board and batten to the sitting room for a character detail as well.
New lighting, millwork, and fresh paint brightens up the entire space giving it a welcoming feel.
This was originally the playroom, but after the remodel, the clients decided to convert it into a sitting room. With all the light coming in from the front windows, it’s the perfect spot to drink morning coffee and have another room to host friends and family.
Kitchen + Dry Bar
Right off the sitting room is the new dry bar and walk-in pantry. We chose Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams for the cabinets and frosted glass pantry door, which brings depth and warmth to the space. It is one of my favorite paint colors and it’s always a perfect compliment to light walls and wood accents!
This star & cross tile from Tile Bar steals the show in the dry bar. The combination of the cream and taupe terracotta adds a natural feel and pairs beautifully with the wood shelves and gold sconces.
This little nook is now the place to store the coffee maker, beverages, and drinkware.
By arching the doorway into the kitchen, we created an organic transition that frames the dry bar perfectly. For the kitchen backsplash, we chose a 4 x 4 handmade looking square tile.
In a main level remodel, the key is creating a flow from one room into the next and this shot captures how we were able to achieve that. The wood tones in the glass cabinets are repeated in the fireplace mantle and the gold finish continues from the pendants to the hardware to the new chandelier in the living room.
By pushing the range wall back a few feet, we were able to incorporate a larger island that can now house seating for four. We used Iron Ore on the island, which ties back to the bar. The two pendants create visual interest over the island and help define the space as well.
Behind the island, we created a hutch look with wood glass cabinets. On the right of the wood cabinets is an appliance garage that hides the microwave, toaster, and other small appliances.
Cambria Colton countertops bring all the design elements together with the creamy base and black and gold veining.
In between the kitchen and living room, we had room for a small round table with four chairs. We opted to keep the lighting simple with cans here to keep sight-lines open into the living room.
Living Room
This main level remodel gets so much natural light and the living room is no exception. We kept the built-ins next to the fireplace, but gave them an updated look with a fresh coat of paint and hardware that matches the kitchen.

Black fish scale tile adds drama to the fireplace and new flooring throughout the home helps all the spaces flow together.

On the right, the staircase got an upgrade to match the entryway and we selected a chandelier from the same collection.

Office
The office got an upgrade with a color drench in Roycroft Bronze Green by Sherwin Williams and new cabinetry to provide storage behind the desk.
