Modern Traditional Main Level Refresh

This modern traditional refresh was a fun design to work on! The client reached out wanting her home to feel more like her style and our plan was to update the main level through paint, new carpet, furniture, replacing the countertops, lighting, and backsplash. As I always say – paint and lighting make a big impact for a relatively low cost in your home.

Let’s check out the design before we get into the transformation of the space!

The Design Plan

Our goal for this design was to bring in a timeless look through a modern traditional design style. Elements you’ll find in this style include clean lines, mixing of metals, and timeless pieces with a neutral color palette. Here was the mood board that served as our inspiration:

And the materials and furniture we landed on for the main level:

Before

Previously, the kitchen island was a two tier design that stepped up to bar height behind the sink. Our plan was to make it one level, update the pendants above it, and replace the countertops and backsplash to something lighter.

For the living room side, the client and myself loved the fireplace and built-ins, so we wanted the design to work around it. The plan was to paint the walls a lighter color, replace the carpet, and update the furniture to a more modern traditional style.

This dining area is right off the kitchen, so we wanted the design to continue over here as well. To update this space, we planned on changing out the chandelier and getting a new table and chairs.

Modern Traditional Main Level | After

Painting the walls in this main level made SUCH a difference! The color is Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray and is a really good warm neutral color that goes with wood and stone elements. If you’re looking for ideas on how to refresh your own home, check out my favorite paint color blog post!

New carpet from ProSource lightened up the floor and modernized the space as well. Updated furniture made a big difference here too!

Over the table, we replaced the light fixture and brought in this pretty shaded bronze and gold option. A darker wood table complements the wood millwork throughout this home beautifully. We went with upholstered chairs on the ends of the table to add a sophisticated look paired with black wood chairs that are easy to clean on the sides.

Making the island one level makes this kitchen feel so much bigger! We also painted the island Benjamin Moore Hale Navy, which brought in a pop of color and pairs so well with the Cambria Swanbridge countertops. Switching out the pendants to a glass look also makes the space feel more open. We also updated the backsplash to Retro Lino, which is a handmade subway look from Tile Shop.

These leather counter stools are some of my favorite to recommend because of the price point, clean ability, and timeless look. The black legs of the stools also tie in to the pendant lights and new matte black faucet.

This project was such a good reminder that you don’t need to undergo a full remodel to make your home feel updated and fresh. By painting the walls, swapping out lighting, and getting new furniture, your space can have wonderful transformation!
