The #holdridgemoderntudor is currently in the works and I’ll be sharing the design process of this basement design with you today. If you’ve been wondering what a full scope interior project is like with Willaby Way, keep reading! I also share answers to a couple of questions I got on Instagram at the end!
With all of my projects, we always start with virtual call where we’ll chat through the details of your project, get your questions answered, and discuss the design process. After the call, I send a proposal that includes the pricing, timeline, and deliverables for your space.
Once the proposal is submitted and contract signed, the work begins! Depending on where you’re located and the scope of the project, I’ll also come out to your home for a site visit to gather measurements and more details.
Site Visit
During the site visit, I have my handy tape measure and laser measure with me, along with graph paper to ensure I get the details written down. There are times when clients already have a floor plan, which is a great place to start to verify measurements and gather any additional details.
Mood Boards
Then, the official first step is the design process is your mood board. This shows the overall inspiration for your space including color palette, material examples, and a direction for the design to head in. With this space, the design included a three season porch and basement remodel.
Three Season Porch
Here are the design elements that were included in the porch mood board:
- Vaulted ceiling with wood accent
- Modern ceiling fan with can lighting throughout
- Stone fireplace to bring in that tudor feel in a modern way
- Light waterproof plank flooring with an outdoor rug to bring in a cozy feel
- Sconces on the wall shared with the house for ambient lighting
- Cozy, yet modern furniture to encourage conversation and hanging out
Basement
And in the basement, these elements were included:
- Incorporating a table and seating area by the walkout doors for games and hanging out
- Painted vanity for a pop of color in the bathroom
- Adding a mantle to the brick fireplace for warmth in wood tones
- Moody office with darker walls and wood accents for a masculine feel
- Neutral and classic choices for a beautiful guest bedroom
- Accent vertical paneling behind the girls desks to add character
- Materials like wool carpet, waterproof plank flooring, classic paint colors, and pattern floor bath tile for a cozy feel in the space
- Lighting that reflects the modern tudor design of the home
Selections
Next is the process is selection sheets. This is where we get into the details of each material and start sourcing what will actually go in the space. With my projects, I provide clients with 2 options to choose from. They will have a little different feels, but both go with the overall mood the clients want their space to have. I send over the selections via Google Docs because it allows us to comment back and forth and for clients to be able to ask questions directly about a selection. The sheet contains notes, dimensions, links to the selection, pricing, and photos.
Bath Option One
With this project, the first bathroom option had navy cabinets, blue pattern tile, traditional fixtures, and a gold mirror as an accent.
Bath Option Two
In the second bath option, green cabinetry was paired with a more modern looking fixtures and a wood accent mirror.
By showing the clients these two options, it allows them to visually see the selections together and understand how they would play off each other. It allows us to narrow down to their favorites and adjust where needed.
Floor Plan
Depending on the project, this is the point where we get into the floor plan and elevations. Floor plans and elevations provide the layout for the space. They are also used to get bids for construction, cabinetry, flooring, and countertops. It’s where we figure out the plan for where furniture will go and includes details notes.
Think of a floor plan like a birds eye view of the space. It’s as if you’re taking away the ceiling and looking down into the space.
As far as elevations, it’s as if you cut through the space and are looking at a specific wall. These are especially important for cabinetry since you see the detailed view of the measurements and layout.
Showroom Meeting
Once we have the selections narrowed down, we also plan a showroom meeting. This is where we see all of the materials in person and get a feel for how they would interact with each other in real life. Depending on the size and scope of the project, this can be one hour or multiple showrooms for a half day meeting.
Renderings
And finally, my favorite part – the renderings! These 3D images allow you to see your space with the new floor plan and materials you’ve chosen. It’s also where we can make decisions about tile or color options more quickly because you’re able to see it visually in the space. Again, depending on the size of your project, you’ll receive 5-10+ images of your space at different angles.
Living Area
In the Modern Tudor project, we’re bring character to the living room with vertical shiplap by the desk area. This is where the kids will do their homework and school. On the other side of this space will be a game table and spot for hanging out.
To create a division between the living and study area, a half wall bookshelf will create additional storage and provide a barrier. The column is currently in the space, but the plan is to wrap it in wood to tie into other elements within the space.
On the fireplace side, a mantle will add a wood element and provide a cozy space with seating and coffee table.
Now, this space has a spot for everyone in the family to hang out and will be a great place for entertaining.
Office + Workout Room
Another space in this basement will be the office and workout room. LVT flooring makes it easy to workout and use a rolling desk chair.
To bring character to the wall, a board and batten paneling in a soft olive color will add depth. The barn door separates the space from the storage room on the other side.
Bathroom
The bathroom is getting a complete revamp with pattern tile flooring, navy cabinetry, subway tile shower, and a hexagon shower floor.
To finish off the bathroom, a unique shaped mirror is paired with sconces on either side.
Guest Room
And finally, the guest room! This space is getting a fresh look with the millwork painted the same as the board and batten half wall for a soft and cozy look.
A new light fixture and furniture complete this space!
Throughout and Completion
Throughout the process, I am also available for questions and assistance! You or your contractor will be able to take the design plan and selections, order the materials, and complete the space. At the end of the project, I also schedule a time to come out to style the space and shoot photos.
Questions
Do you work with architects?
Yes, depending on the size and scope of the project! They are so knowledge and definitely experts in their field. When there are walls coming down, rooms being added, structural items to pay special attention to, I would highly recommend bringing in an architect and can recommend some as well.
Do you also PM the project?
No, I do not. Currently, I do not order any materials for the clients or schedule subs to the job site. I work with you or your contractor to ensure that everything is spec’d and ready to go once the design phase is complete and then you or your contractor take it from there. If there are questions that come up, I am available along the way!
Would the client pick the GC or builder or do you have recommendations?
Both! If you already have a builder or contractor you’re working with, that’s great! Otherwise, I can provide recommendations as well.
How do you take your client’s budget into consideration when planning a project?
Budget is the #1 aspect when planning a project! We cover this in the initial call and if you’ve been given allowances by your builder, we stick to those! In the selection process, I also provide a couple of options at different price points so you can determine what is worth it to you in terms of specific materials. Thinking through your budget and what you’re willing to spend is a great first start when considering a remodel or refresh.
And there ya have it – that’s the process of design from start to finish! If you’re interested in working together on a project for your home, I’d love to connect with you and answer any questions you have!
