The Holridge Modern Tudor project is complete! After sharing the design process for this project awhile back, it’s so exciting that it’s now time for the reveal.
This basement remodel included a living room, game space, desk area, bathroom, workout room/office, and guest bedroom. The clients wanted to bring the modern tudor style from the rest of their home into this space and make it a spot their family loved to hang out. Our goal was to make the basement feel cozy, welcoming, and bright. Since the clients were referred to me by their friend, who is a talented photographer, it was fun to bring her in for the style + photoshoot. Chelsie Lopez took all the photos and they turned out amazing!
Let’s check out the before + afters and get into all the details.
Living Room
Before
This living room is a smaller space and had the potential to feel cozy, but the previous layout was not working well for the family. The plan was to add a mantle, convert the wood burning fireplace to an insert, and rework the furniture.
After
Now, this area of the basement feels cozy and welcoming. To brighten up the entire space, the walls were painted Repose Gray and the carpet was replaced. Adding a mantle really dressed up the fireplace and now with an insert, the fireplace is more usable.
A sofa with a chaise provides lots of seating, while still allowing the room to feel open. We brought in extra seating through a leather ottoman and poofs behind the sofa.
Previously, this corner was unused space and we made it more functional by adding a built-in with open shelving above. I love the clients’ books here because not only are they accessible, but they also bring color to the space too!
This area used to be one long space, which made it hard to figure out a furniture layout. To divide the living space from the game area, we added a half wall that has storage on the other side to hide toys and games. Framing out the column in a dark wood made it feel like an intentional design element, rather than a structure that just had to be there.
To make use of this spot under the stairs, the clients found this perfect little cabinet that houses their records and provides the perfect place for the record player to rest.
Now, this space is well defined and provides the perfect spot for family and friend hang outs!
Game Area
Before
This area was being used to store toys. The goal was to find practical storage, that also fit in with the style of the rest of the design.
After
What a difference! These white storage units hold a lot of toys, but also look really good in the space. Above the units are photos of the clients’ kids in gold frames that add a personal touch to the basement.
And now you can see the other side of the half wall that separates the living room from the game area! It not only divides the room, but also is a great spot for storing and hiding games and toys from the living room view.
Desks
Before
During the year of learning from home, the clients turned this area of the basement into a desk spot for their daughters. Even as they head back to school, we wanted to keep this as a spot where they can do homework.
After
With the vertical shiplap and three desks in a row, this wall became a focal point in the space making it one of my favorite views of this lower level! A round table and chairs provides a spot to play games and do crafts.
To add a moody feel to this wall, the vertical shiplap was painted Cast Iron. The sconces provide task lighting above each desk.
With the trim painted white, the room feels bright, yet warm since we kept the dark wood windows.
Isn’t this such a beautiful spot for the girls to work on their schoolwork? I’d love this desk area in my home!
Guest Bedroom
Before
Previously, this room was being used as storage and the goal was to lighten it up and make it into an inviting guest bedroom.
After
The design plan was for the walls to be painted Snowbound and the trim and board and batten Repose Gray to match the rest of the basement walls. The two-tone turned out beautifully and makes this room feel classy and bright.
The gold scalloped semi-flush mount adds a feminine touch to the space and the wood bed frame has a nod to the modern tudor style.
The closet doors turned out so pretty with the light gray paint and are so much better than the previous mirror sliding doors!
Bathroom
Before
Before the remodel, the clients’ daughters didn’t even want to go in this bathroom. The goal was to get rid of the outdated fixtures, brighten it up, and make it a space everyone in the family could use.
After
Such a transformation! Painting the walls a lighter color really made this space feel fresh and provides a great background for the other selections to shine. The vanity is painted in a navy blue color, which complements the patterned tile perfectly.
A gold mirror with a unique arch shape is perfect for this modern tudor space!
Oil rubbed bronze fixtures contrast the gold tones in this room and bring warmth to the otherwise light space.
Workout Room + Office
And finally, the workout room and office! Even though this is a multi-purpose room, it was important to make it flow with the rest of the design. We brought the LVT used by the walkout sliding doors into this space, which added warmth and an easy to clean flooring option.
To keep with the modern tudor style in here as well, we added a rustic barn door to hide the storage room and installed a board and batten wall. Now, it’s a great backdrop for video calls and brought depth and texture to this room too.
I’m so happy for this family and the beautiful space they now have in their basement! We’re kicking off designs for an addition to the main level, so stay tuned for more designs in this home coming soon!
